Archaeological Fieldwork
GGAT has been delivering archaeological work in South Wales since the company’s inception in 1976. We have an unparalleled knowledge of the archaeology of the region, with a long-running portfolio of flagship commercial projects. These encompass everything from prehistoric settlements, Roman fortresses and medieval sailing vessels, to the globally-significant sites of the Industrial Revolution.
We have the capacity to undertake archaeological work at all stages of the development process, from site evaluation at the planning stage, to the delivery of mitigation for consented projects. We work alongside clients to ensure cost-effective and timely delivery of our archaeological projects, whether watching briefs, evaluations, open area excavations or historic building recording.
Watching Briefs
Watching briefs are archaeological monitoring exercises which take place during the construction process.
Historic Building Recording
Historic building recording (HBR) is mitigation that is applied when a historic structure is to be altered or demolished.
Excavation
Within the development framework, excavation (also known as strip, map and record/sample) is undertaken when important archaeological sites cannot be preserved in situ.
Evaluation
The evaluation of a site takes place during the proposal stage of a development.
